Last November 26, 2018, the English Month Elocution Contest was held at the TFCA Sanctuary with the theme: Building Stronger Competencies through English Literature. It was hosted by the school’s guidance counselor, Ms. Sarah Danielle Caaway and school chaplain Ptr. Jonathan Malangis. The objectives of the program are to show how using a variety of literary pieces from different genres are able to hone not just the four language skills (specifically the speaking ability), but also the talents of the students like dancing, acting, and singing, to encourage the students as well as the parents to value reading especially the famous literary pieces that contributed a lot in the English literature, and last but not the least, is to acknowledge well-known authors from Europe, America and Asia.

Rev. Jose Oreta leading the opening prayer

Ptr. Jose Oreta opened the program in prayer which was followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, ASEAN Hymn and San Juan Hymn performed by the AO1. Mrs. Chanel B. Alava, the academic coordinator gave the opening remarks wherein she mentioned that every elocution contest is the time for the students to showcase what they’ve been toiling ever since they started studying. She also thanked the parents for the unending support that they give to their children and to the school activities. After that, Ms. Casey Monzon read the criteria for judging while Mrs. Alava came back to the stage to introduce the judges and they were the following: Ms. Maria Talitha Estrella L. Borines, the school principal of Union Village Christian Academy, Mrs. Catherine Elegido, the guidance counselor of Manuel Roxas High School and Mr. Anacleto Onrubia, the former speech coordinator of TFCA.

Preschool students in the Character Portrayal competition.

The first category which was executed by the charming preschoolers was the Character Portrayal or the impersonation of renowned authors from Europe, America, and Asia. All pupils from nursery to Kinder were able to model their costumes imitating the assigned authors to them and some were able to quote the authors’ famous lines and works. The next category was the poem recitation with the piece “Good Enough” and this was for the selected pupils from grades 1 and 2. Here, the pupils recited not just with their words and enunciation, but also their hand gestures.

The last individual contest was the On the Spot Storytelling which was among the selected grade 3 pupils. Here, the contenders are expected to narrate a well-organized story utilizing the items prepared in front of them which were a small radio, a bottle of alcohol, a hair drier, a mug, and a stuffed toy. The five of them were successful in stitching events that actually made sense.

Following all the individual contests was the group presentation which was the song interpretation.

Here, the students as a class showcased their skills in understanding the song assigned to them through dancing. The first to perform was the Grade 1 with the song, Do Re Mi from Sound of Music, next was the Grade 2 with the song A Whole New World from Aladdin and last was the Grade 3 with the song Under the Sea from Little Mermaid.

To end the students’ performances, the grade 11 pupils graced the stage with a special number, an adaptation of the story Beauty and the Beast. Indeed, TFCA has a bunch of talented and flexible senior high school students for they sang, danced and acted like maven theater actors. The audience enjoyed every bit of the show. After the presentation, the giving of awards took place wherein Mrs. Alava and Mr. Tan accompanied the judges to award to deserving students.

Mr. Tan gave the closing remarks which was more of a reminder to the parents about media and what it offers to the students. He mentioned that as we want to nourish the minds of our students with proper and sufficient information, we must be selective and careful in accessing media. Mr. Michael Agapay led the closing prayer of the event.
