In its pursuit to produce Christian leaders who use their skills to give glory to God, TFCA got involved in Asia’s largest educational fair at the SMX Convention Center. The school sent chosen representatives to compete in one of the fair’s contests and workshops.

The WordWorks Creative Writing Workshop and contest took place on January 28, 2017. It was hosted by Diwa Learning Inc. and Magica and held at  SmartKids Asia Philippines. Cheeno Marlo Sayuno, a Carlos Palanca awardee and assistant professor at the University of the Philippines, was the speaker of the event. In the workshop, he discussed short stories – from basics of how to write them, to how to write a plot that would engage the readers. It was after his workshop when the competition started. The competitors were asked to write a plot as well as the other elements of their short story. They were given an hour to complete the task. Winners would come from among the 36 aspiring creative writers.

Mrs. Chanel B. Alava, the school’s academic coordinator, accompanied the selected students from grades 8 – 9 to compete. Among them was Aliyah Sumalisid, a grade 8 TFCA student, who was one of the overall winners of the competition along with Elizabeth Anne D. Carpo of Canossa School of Sta. Rosa, Laguna, and Syrah Karelle S. Odulio of Espiritu Santo Parochial School, Sta. Cruz, Manila.

“Writing stories in various creative ways are the most important thing,” Aliyah expressed when asked what she learned from the experience in an interview with a journalist from Diwa Learning Inc. “It unleashed a creative side of me I never thought I had,” she added.

To close the event, Mr. Cheeno Sayuno also gave words of inspiration and encouragement. The participants of the workshop and competition all took away new knowledge and skills. Aside from the learning and experience, they also received a token of an eight piece classics book collection from the organizers of the event.
